Weekly Update - Term 2 Week 2

 RM Weekly Update

Term: 2                  Week: 2                  Dates: 15th–19th January 2018

This Week

Next Week

Literacy
This week we began Unit 3 and introduced the sounds ‘e’ and ‘n’. Some students are getting mixed up with the sounds of ‘e’ and ‘i’, so please practice these at home.
We will be cover our new sounds ‘j’ and ‘k’. We will also cover the camera words: ‘you’ and ‘are’.
Math
This week, we learnt how to estimate. The kids now understand that guessing is estimating and that it is different from counting. They are still learning the difference between big quantities and small quantities.
Next week, we will talk about numbers and the meaning of one more and one less. This will provide a foundation for topics such as addition and subtraction.
Inquiry
This week, we continued our new topic of patterns. We went on more inquiry walks and discovered patterns. We then made a pattern on a flat surface with two colours.

Central idea: Patterns help us understand how the world works.

Lines of inquiry:
  • defining patterns
  • creating patterns
  • uses of patterns

Our learner profile for this week was ‘inquirer’. Please encourage your children to ask a lot of questions.
Next week, we will continue to talk about visual patterns and introduce more complex patterns involving more than two colours.

We will learn patterns through the book “The very hungry caterpillar” by Eric Carle.

Our class has been set up to reflect this book and we will open our secret garden role play on Monday – the kids are very excited! You can ask them about it at the weekend J
Home Learning
As a home learning activity, please practice the sound ‘e’ and the difference between ‘e’ and ‘i’. Draw some pictures and take photos of items around us that start with ‘e’ and ‘n’. You can send me these photos and I will talk about them at circle time.
Notices and Events
  1. Swimming lessons are on Thursdays. You can send your child in their normal uniform on these days.
  2. Please send in natural material such as twigs, stones and shells if you have any in your garden or you go to a beach. We can use these for pattern making.
  3. Also, if you have any toilet rolls that you are throwing away – please send them in for junk modeling.

Thank you for your support J
