A lifecycle is a pattern too!

We focussed on showing the kids that a life cycle happens again and again ... so it is also a type of pattern. This is called 'Going Further' on our inquiry cycle.

 "Look, they egg... butterfly egg!"

This is what we think caterpillars are like inside their eggs...

"It come out of the cocoon now!"

Taechou: "I see something..."

 Rei: "Is it  real butterfly?"

Now that we've seen the stages... it was time to talk about the cycle happening again.
We watched how butterflies lay eggs and how the cycle starts again.

Aly: "So the cocoon ... then beautiful butterfly come out"

 "Time to lay egg again"

Geo: "I think this is for cocoon"

 "I putting egg"

Then we focussed on making some art work about what we learnt.

This week, I am a very happy teacher because all of RM really enjoyed this topic and understands the concept of lifecycles and patterns. Now to deepen their knowledge further, we will do other lifecycles next week :)

Here is our weekly review/preview

This Week

Next Week

Literacy
This week, we learnt the sound ‘ll’. We learnt that it is usually found at the end of words. We then practiced blending and writing some ‘ll’ words such as ‘doll’, ‘ball’, ‘bull’. This also lead us to distinguish between ‘d’ and ‘b’ as the kids often get confused between the two.
Next week, we will focus on the sound ‘ss’. We will do a fun activity with a  snake and learn to write ‘hiss’.
Math
We practiced numbers 1-10 and learnt how to take away (subtract) from 10. It was a difficult topic to grasp so we focused on the meaning of subtraction – to take away.
We will learn about positional language – for example: in, on, between, below, above.
Inquiry
This week we understood the idea that a lifecycle is a pattern. The students showed a lot of knowledge in this topic and put it into practice by drawing and talking about the lifecycle. An interesting thing that happened is that students began to talk about the butterfly laying eggs, this shows evidence that they grasped how the lifecycle continues.
Next week, we will see if the students can apply their knowledge of the butterfly life cycle into other life cycles such as the ladybug and the hen life cycles. We will look at similarities and differences between these animals as well.
