As mentioned at the Growth Mindset presentation, I tend to show my class the 'Austin's Butterfly' video around this time of year. They are at a point where they can understand the concept that perfection requires hard work and perfection can be different for different kids. They are also confident enough to give and receive critique/feedback.
Austin's Butterfly Link
We began by reading 'The Way I feel' by Janan Cain. This book talks about emotions and the purpose of the book was to accept that it's ok to have various emotions, but the important thing is to learn how to deal with those emotions.
Having had that discussion, we talked about our attitude for the week 'Cooperation'. Then the class was divided into pairs and each pair were given a page from the book to copy/draw.
We learnt how to work together on one project. Then we took turns providing feedback on each drawing. The kids were open to criticism having watched the video. They understood that by learning how to improve on their current work and mistakes, they can produce even better work.
Then we talked about how specifically we can improve our first try. Some mentioned that they did not know how to mix colours to 'shade'. So Kru.Noon helped us out with an example.
Then we read the book again and decided that we were 'curious' to see how we could improve our work. The kids were excited and this made ME excited!!
So, off we went to try again! We reflected on the feedback we received and we put it to use on our second try!
We took a minute to reflect again, for some final teaks/improvements. Here's an example:
Aly: "I think this could be bigger"
James: "need colour outside"
So, some of us went off and tried to make changes for a third time. They were excited to see how they could improve even further.
And then we shared what we had done and talked about how awesome our final work turned out!
What a difference from our first try! Here are some examples:
Geo and Kairi
Chris, Taechou and Shafat
Ohm and Rolly
Chay and Shafat
Chloe and Nina
Markie and Rei
Aly and James
Check out the detail in their art work. Well done kids, I'm so proud of you!!! :)
